On the Easter afternoon of March 29th in 1959, two churches came together to break ground on the formation of a new church, called Chiques United Methodist Church. The two merging churches were the Mount Joy UMC, founded in 1834, and the Salunga UMC, founded in 1889.
The new site for the merged churches was midway between the parent churches and midway between the Big and Little Chiques Creeks, hence the name Chiques United Methodist Church. In 1959, the first cornerstone was laid on June 7th and the building was dedicated on November 10th.
Since then, many additions have been made to the building. Today, you will find the restored church bell from the Salunga UMC at the front of the Chiques UM Church building.
