CHIQUES History

On Easter afternoon of March 29, 1959, two churches joined together to break ground on the formation of one new church: Chiques United Methodist Church! The merging churches were the Mount Joy UMC, founded in 1834, and the Salunga UMC, founded in 1889.

Since the site for the newly merged church landed midway between both the parent churches and midway between the Big and Little Chiques Creeks, the congregants chose to name the newly established church after the Chiques Creeks. In 1959, the first cornerstone was laid on June 7th, and the building was officially dedicated on November 10th.

Many additions have been made along the way. Today, you will find the restored church bell from the Salunga UMC standing at the front of our church building.

We are a loving people who encourage and support one another in our individual and collective pursuit of an ever-deepening relationship with God.

Matthew 28: 18-20

And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”
