On Easter afternoon of March 29, 1959, two churches joined and broke ground together to form one new church: Chiques United Methodist Church! The two merging churches were the Mount Joy UMC, founded in 1834, and the Salunga UMC, founded in 1889.
Since the new site for the merged churches landed midway between the parent churches and midway between the Big and Little Chiques Creeks, the congregants chose to name the newly established church Chiques United Methodist Church. In 1959, the first cornerstone was laid on June 7th, and the building was dedicated on November 10th.
Since then, many additions have been made to the building. Today, you will find the restored church bell from the Salunga UMC at the front of the Chiques Church building.
